How much is tax, title and license in Arizona?

Tax, title and license on a new $30,000 car in Phoenix comes to about $3,247.50 in Arizona — $2,730 sales tax plus $517.50 in Arizona MVD (ADOT) registration and title fees, or 10.8% of the price. That total assumes a dealer purchase with no trade-in and no manufacturer rebate, registered in Phoenix.

The line items are: Sales tax $2,730, Vehicle License Tax (VLT) $504, Registration fee $8, Air quality research fee $1.50, Title fee $4.

Arizona charges a state vehicle tax rate of 5.6%, and combined state-plus-local rates range from 7.6% to 9.8% depending on where the vehicle is registered. A trade-in reduces the taxable amount in Arizona. A separately stated manufacturer rebate also reduces the taxable amount. Private-party sales between individuals are not taxed in Arizona.

Every amount above comes from Arizona MVD (ADOT) and Arizona statute — the sources are listed in full at the foot of this page, and every figure was last checked against them on 19 August 2026.

How does this Arizona calculator work?

The VLT formula, step by step

Arizona’s Vehicle License Tax (ARS §28-5801) starts from the manufacturer’s base retail price — the MSRP for the model year, not your negotiated price. Year one, the assessed value is 60% of that MSRP. Each subsequent year the assessed value falls 16.25% from the prior year’s figure. The tax is then $2.80 per $100 of assessed value for a new vehicle’s first registration, or $2.89 per $100 for used vehicles and renewals, with a $10 annual floor. This calculator applies exactly that sequence, then adds the $8 registration fee, the $1.50 air quality research fee and — on a purchase — the $4 title fee.

How the sales tax side works

A dealer sale is subject to Arizona TPT at the combined rate for the dealer’s business location: the 5.6% state rate plus the county and city components. Enter a ZIP or pick a city and the calculator applies that jurisdiction’s combined rate. Trade-in allowances and manufacturer rebates assigned to the dealer are deducted before tax. A private-party sale is exempt entirely, and the calculator zeroes the tax line when you tick that option.

What renewal mode does

Switch to renewal mode and the calculator drops the sales tax and title fee (a renewal is not a sale), prices the VLT at the used-vehicle rate of $2.89 per $100, and depreciates the assessed value by 16.25% for each year since the model year. That is why the year-by-year table falls every year until it reaches the $10 minimum.

How does Arizona calculate vehicle tax and registration?

Arizona charges a VLT instead of a flat registration fee

Most states charge a flat fee or a weight-based fee. Arizona charges a Vehicle License Tax based on what your car is worth. Year one, the assessed value is 60% of the manufacturer’s base retail price — the MSRP, not what you paid. Every year after, that assessed value drops by 16.25%. You then pay $2.80 per $100 of assessed value on a new vehicle, or $2.89 per $100 on a used one, with a $10 annual floor.

The VLT is based on MSRP, not your purchase price

This catches people out constantly. Negotiating $4,000 off the sticker does not reduce your VLT by a cent — the assessed value is calculated from the manufacturer’s base retail price for that model year. It also means a heavily discounted car can carry a surprisingly large VLT in year one.

Private-party sales are completely exempt from sales tax

Buying from a private seller in Arizona means no TPT and no use tax — not a reduced rate, none at all. On a $30,000 car in Phoenix that is roughly $2,730 you simply do not pay. You still owe the VLT, the $8 registration fee, the $1.50 air quality research fee and the $4 title fee.

Electric and alternative-fuel vehicles get a large VLT break

Arizona puts alternative-fuel vehicles in Classes 9–10, where the year-one assessed value is 1% of MSRP rather than 60%, taxed at $4 per $100 with a $5 minimum. On a $50,000 EV that is roughly $20 of VLT in year one instead of about $840 — one of the largest EV registration advantages in the country.

The dealer’s location sets your sales tax rate

Arizona taxes a dealer sale where the dealer does business, not where you live. Buying in Buckeye (9.8%) instead of Chandler (7.8%) costs about $600 more on a $30,000 car. If you are shopping across the Valley anyway, the dealer’s city is worth checking before you sign.

Trade-ins and rebates both reduce the taxable amount

Arizona subtracts the trade-in allowance before calculating tax, and manufacturer rebates assigned to the dealer at the point of sale come off the taxable amount too. A $35,000 car with a $10,000 trade-in and a $2,000 rebate is taxed on $23,000.

What do people get wrong about Arizona car fees?

Frequently asked questions

How much is tax, title and license on a car in Arizona?

On a $30,000 vehicle bought new from a Phoenix dealer, expect roughly $2,730 in sales tax (9.1%), about $504 in Vehicle License Tax for year one, plus $8 registration, $1.50 air quality research fee and a $4 title fee — around $3,247 total on top of the purchase price. Buy the same car privately and the sales tax disappears entirely.

Is Arizona VLT based on what I paid for the car?

No. The VLT uses 60% of the manufacturer’s base retail price (MSRP) for the model year, reduced 16.25% for each year since the vehicle was first registered. Your negotiated purchase price does not change it.

Do I pay sales tax buying a car from a private seller in Arizona?

No. Casual sales between private parties are exempt from Arizona TPT and use tax. You still owe the VLT, registration fee, air quality research fee and title fee when you register the vehicle.

How much is the VLT on an electric car in Arizona?

Alternative-fuel and electric vehicles fall into Classes 9–10, assessed at just 1% of MSRP and taxed at $4 per $100, with a $5 annual minimum. A $50,000 EV works out to roughly $20 in year-one VLT.

Does a trade-in reduce Arizona sales tax?

Yes. The trade-in allowance is subtracted from the purchase price before tax is calculated, so a $35,000 car with a $10,000 trade-in is taxed on $25,000.

Why is my Arizona registration renewal cheaper every year?

The assessed value behind the VLT falls 16.25% each year, so the tax falls with it — until it hits the $10 annual minimum. The $8 registration fee and $1.50 air quality research fee stay the same.
