Florida prices the annual license tax by automobile net weight; figures are the amounts county tax collectors actually bill (statutory tax plus mandatory add-ons). Renewing for two years at once simply doubles them.

How much is tax, title and license in Florida?

Tax, title and license on a new $30,000 car in Miami-Dade County comes to about $2,186.85 in Florida — $1,850 sales tax plus $336.85 in FLHSMV registration and title fees, or 7.3% of the price. That total assumes a dealer purchase with no trade-in and no manufacturer rebate, registered in Miami-Dade County.

The line items are: Sales tax $1,850, Registration fee $36.10, Certificate of title (electronic) $75.75, Initial Registration Fee $225.

Florida charges a state vehicle tax rate of 6%, and combined state-plus-local rates range from 6% to 7.5% depending on where the vehicle is registered, with local tax applying only to the first $5,000 of the price. A trade-in reduces the taxable amount in Florida. A manufacturer rebate does not reduce the taxable amount.

Every amount above comes from FLHSMV and Florida statute — the sources are listed in full at the foot of this page, and every figure was last checked against them on 19 August 2026.

How does this Florida calculator work?

The 6% is statewide; the surtax stops at $5,000

Florida sales tax on a vehicle is 6% of the price less your trade-in, everywhere in the state. Your county’s discretionary surtax — 0% in Collier, up to 1.5% in Hillsborough, Duval, Osceola and Leon — applies only to the first $5,000 of the taxable amount (FL DOR GT-400400), so the county’s entire contribution is at most $75. That is why a $30,000 car and a $90,000 car pay the same local tax, and why the calculator note shows the two pieces separately.

Your county, not the dealer’s

DOR deems a vehicle sale to occur in the county of the residence address on the title — so a Tampa resident buying in Orlando pays Hillsborough’s 1.5% surtax, not Orange’s 0.5%. Enter your home ZIP and the calculator applies your county automatically. Rates reflect the 2026 schedule, including Palm Beach’s drop to 6.5% on January 1, 2026 — a change many fee sites haven’t caught.

Rebates are taxed; trade-ins are not

DOR is unusually blunt about rebates: a manufacturer refund "is NOT a reduction in the selling price" and tax is due on the full pre-rebate price. Trade-in allowances, by contrast, come off before the 6% + surtax is computed. Dealer prep and doc fees are part of the taxable price too.

The $225 fee most first-time buyers forget

Florida’s Initial Registration Fee — $225 on top of everything else — applies whenever a vehicle is registered without an existing Florida plate being transferred to it: your first car in Florida, an added vehicle, or a new resident registering. If you are replacing a car you already have plated, transfer the plate and the $225 disappears. This calculator includes it in purchase mode; knock $225 off if you are keeping your old plate.

How does Florida calculate vehicle tax and registration?

The $5,000 surtax cap keeps local tax tiny

County surtaxes look like they matter, but on a car they barely move the total: the surtax applies only to the first $5,000, so Hillsborough’s 1.5% adds at most $75 — on any car, at any price. The real bill is the statewide 6%.

No EV fee — and most fee sites get this wrong

Florida statute sets the electric-vehicle license tax at exactly the same amount as a gas car — there is no $200 EV surcharge. That figure comes from legislation that was proposed but never enacted (county associations were still lobbying for one in late 2025). Until the law changes, an EV pays the same $28.10–$46.10 weight-based tax as everyone else.

Transfer your plate, save $225

In Florida the license plate belongs to you, not the car. Transfer your existing plate to the new vehicle and the one-time $225 Initial Registration Fee never applies; register with a fresh plate and it does. It is the single most avoidable fee on this page.

Rebates get taxed in the Sunshine State

A $3,000 factory rebate still carries about $180 of tax — Florida computes the 6% on the full selling price before the manufacturer’s money comes off. Negotiated dealer discounts, by contrast, genuinely lower the price and the tax with it.

Private sales offer no tax escape

Buy from a private seller and the county tax collector charges the same 6% plus surtax on the purchase price when you transfer the title — Florida has no casual-sale exemption and no book-value presumption either; the bill of sale controls. Title within 30 days to avoid the $20 late fee.

New residents usually owe no sales tax — but not nothing

Florida credits sales tax you paid to another state dollar-for-dollar. Owned the car and paid 6%+ elsewhere? No Florida use tax. But the first Florida registration still costs the $225 initial fee plus about $88 to title an out-of-state vehicle and the weight-based license tax.

Registration renews on your birthday

Florida registrations expire at midnight on the owner’s birthday, and you can renew for one year or two (double the fee). The weight-based license tax is modest — $28.10 to $46.10 a year for cars — and unlike the Carolinas there is no property tax riding on the renewal.

What do people get wrong about Florida car fees?

Frequently asked questions

How much is tax, title and license on a $30,000 car in Florida?

In Miami-Dade: $1,850 in sales tax (6% on $30,000 plus 1% on the first $5,000), a $75.75 electronic title, $36.10 annual license tax for a mid-weight car, and — if you are not transferring an existing Florida plate — the one-time $225 Initial Registration Fee. Total: about $2,187, or $1,962 with a plate transfer.

What is the Florida vehicle sales tax rate?

6% statewide, plus your county’s discretionary surtax (0%–1.5% among major counties in 2026) applied to only the first $5,000 of the price. The maximum county add-on is therefore $75 regardless of the vehicle’s cost.

Does Florida charge an extra fee for electric vehicles?

No. Florida Statute 320.08001 sets the EV license tax at the same amount as a comparable gas vehicle. The widely-cited $200 Florida EV fee comes from proposed legislation that has not passed.

What is the $225 initial registration fee in Florida?

A one-time state fee charged when a vehicle is registered without an existing Florida plate being transferred onto it — typical for first cars, added cars and new residents. Transferring the plate from a vehicle you already own avoids it.

Does a trade-in reduce Florida sales tax?

Yes — the trade-in allowance is deducted before the 6% and the county surtax are computed. Manufacturer rebates are not deducted: Florida DOR treats a factory refund as payment, not a price reduction.

Do I pay sales tax on a private car sale in Florida?

Yes — the county tax collector collects 6% plus your county’s surtax (on the first $5,000) when you transfer the title, based on the bill-of-sale price. Transfer within 30 days to avoid the late-title fee.

I just moved to Florida — do I owe sales tax on my car?

Usually not: Florida credits tax paid to your former state dollar-for-dollar, so 6%+ paid elsewhere wipes out Florida use tax. You will still pay about $88 to title the vehicle, the $225 initial registration fee for your first Florida plate, and the annual weight-based license tax.
