How much is tax, title and license in South Carolina?

Tax, title and license on a new $30,000 car comes to about $555 in South Carolina — $500 infrastructure maintenance fee plus $55 in SCDMV registration and title fees, or 1.9% of the price. That total assumes a dealer purchase with no trade-in and no manufacturer rebate.

The line items are: Infrastructure Maintenance Fee $500, Registration fee $40, Certificate of title $15.

South Carolina charges a state vehicle tax rate of 5%, with no county or city add-on anywhere in the state, capped at $500 by statute. A trade-in reduces the taxable amount in South Carolina. A manufacturer rebate does not reduce the taxable amount. South Carolina registers vehicles for 2 years at a time.

Every amount above comes from SCDMV and South Carolina statute — the sources are listed in full at the foot of this page, and every figure was last checked against them on 18 August 2026.

How does this South Carolina calculator work?

The $500 ceiling does most of the work

Since July 2017 South Carolina charges an Infrastructure Maintenance Fee instead of sales tax on vehicles: 5% of the price, but never more than $500 (SC Code 56-3-627). Every vehicle costing $10,000 or more — after the trade-in comes off — pays exactly $500. That makes South Carolina one of the cheapest states in the country to buy a car, and it is why this calculator shows the same tax on a $12,000 hatchback and a $90,000 truck. Local option sales taxes do not apply to IMF transactions.

Trade-ins reduce the base — the statute says so

Some fee calculators admit they could not confirm whether a trade-in reduces the IMF. The statute is explicit: for dealer sales the fee applies to the proceeds less your trade-in allowance, and for private sales the taxable “fair market value” is defined as the purchase price less any trade-in, or the SCDMV pricing-guide value less any trade-in. This calculator deducts it — though on a $10,000+ vehicle the $500 cap usually decides the answer anyway.

Registration runs on a two-year clock

South Carolina plates are biennial: $40 for two years for most passenger cars ($38 at age 64, $36 at 65 or older or with a disability, $10 for motorcycles), and the $120 electric / $60 hybrid road use fee follows the same two-year cycle. The 5-year projection reflects that — you pay in years one, three and five, and owe SCDMV nothing in between.

The number this calculator cannot give you: county property tax

South Carolina vehicles owe annual property tax to the county — and unusually, you must pay the county FIRST and show the paid receipt before SCDMV will register or renew. The amount turns on your county’s millage and your vehicle’s assessed value, and on a newer car it is routinely several hundred dollars a year — far more than the $40 biennial plate fee. Your county auditor can quote it exactly; this estimate deliberately leaves it out rather than guess.

How does South Carolina calculate vehicle tax and registration?

The cheapest car tax of any state on this site

A $30,000 purchase carries $500 of IMF — an effective rate of 1.7%. The same car costs about $900 in North Carolina, $2,250+ in Kansas and $2,700+ in Arizona once local rates are counted. The flip side: South Carolina counties bill vehicle property tax every year, which claws some of that advantage back over time.

Pay the county before the DMV will talk to you

Most states collect property tax with registration. South Carolina inverts it: the county auditor bills your vehicle property tax first, and SCDMV requires the paid receipt before issuing or renewing registration. Budget for the county bill as part of every renewal cycle — on newer vehicles it is usually the largest single cost of ownership.

Trade-ins reduce the fee; rebates effectively don’t matter

Your trade-in allowance comes off before the 5% is computed, on dealer and private sales alike. Manufacturer rebates are not deducted — but since any vehicle over $10,000 hits the $500 cap regardless, the rebate question almost never changes the bill.

Private sales pay on book value, capped at the same $500

There is no casual-sale exemption: a private purchase owes 5% of fair market value — your price less trade-in, or the SCDMV-adopted pricing guide value less trade-in — with the same $500 ceiling. Transfers between immediate family members are exempt.

Moving in? A flat $250 covers you

A vehicle previously registered in your name in another state pays a flat $250 IMF when first registered in South Carolina — half the normal cap, and one of the simplest new-resident rules anywhere.

Two-year plates, and a discount for turning 64

Registration is biennial: $40 for two years, dropping to $38 in the year you are 64 and $36 from 65 on (or with a disability) — a statutory senior discount most fee calculators ignore. Motorcycles pay just $10 for two years.

Electric vehicles pay $120 every two years

Battery-electric vehicles owe a $120 biennial road use fee and hybrids $60, collected with registration (SC Code 56-3-645). On an annual basis that is $60 and $30 — among the mildest EV fees of any state that charges one.

Frequently asked questions

How much is tax, title and license on a $30,000 car in South Carolina?

About $555: the Infrastructure Maintenance Fee capped at $500, a $15 title fee and a $40 biennial plate fee. There is no local sales tax on vehicles. County vehicle property tax — billed annually by your county — comes on top and varies by where you live.

Does South Carolina charge sales tax on cars?

No. Since July 2017 vehicles pay a 5% Infrastructure Maintenance Fee at titling instead, capped at $500 — and IMF transactions are exempt from both state and local sales taxes. Any vehicle over $10,000 pays exactly $500.

Does a trade-in reduce the South Carolina IMF?

Yes — SC Code 56-3-627 applies the 5% to the price less your trade-in allowance, on dealer and private sales alike. On vehicles over $10,000 the $500 cap usually applies either way.

Do I pay the IMF on a private-party sale?

Yes — 5% of the vehicle’s fair market value (your price less trade-in, or the SCDMV pricing-guide value less trade-in), capped at $500, collected when you title. Transfers between immediate family members are exempt.

I just moved to South Carolina — what does it cost to register my car?

A flat $250 IMF (instead of the 5%), plus the $15 title fee and the $40 biennial registration ($36 if you are 65 or older). You will also need to pay your county vehicle property tax first and bring the receipt.

How often do I renew my registration in South Carolina?

Every two years. The biennial fee is $40 for most passenger vehicles ($38 at age 64, $36 at 65+, $10 for motorcycles), and EVs add a $120 biennial road use fee ($60 for hybrids). County property tax, however, is billed every year.

Why do I have to pay my county before renewing my SC registration?

South Carolina law makes the county property tax a prerequisite: the county auditor bills your vehicle tax, and SCDMV will not issue or renew registration until it is paid. On newer vehicles this annual bill is usually several times larger than the registration fee itself.
