Arkansas charges a state vehicle tax rate of 6.5%, and combined state-plus-local rates range from 8.5% to 10% depending on where the vehicle is registered, with local tax applying only to the first $2,500 of the price. A trade-in reduces the taxable amount in Arkansas. A manufacturer rebate does not reduce the taxable amount.

Every amount above comes from Arkansas DFA and Arkansas statute — the sources are listed in full at the foot of this page, and every figure was last checked against them on 18 August 2026.

How does this Arkansas calculator work?

You pay the state, not the dealer

Arkansas is one of the few states where the dealer hands you the keys and the tax bill stays open: Ark. Code 26-52-510 makes the buyer pay sales tax directly to a DFA revenue office when registering, within 60 days. This calculator shows what that revenue-office visit will cost — tax, tags, title and decal together. Miss the window and 10% is added.

The $4,000 / $10,000 used-car bands

Used vehicles get their own rate ladder, tested against the total price: under $4,000 no tax is due at all; from $4,000 to $9,999.99 the state portion drops to 3.5% (local taxes still apply in full); at $10,000 and up — and for every new vehicle — the standard 6.5% applies. The band is chosen by the vehicle’s full price, not the price after trade-in, and for private sales DFA presumes the price is at least the average loan value in the pricing guides.

Local tax stops at $2,500

Arkansas abolished most local "single transaction" caps in 2008 — but kept them for motor vehicles. Your city and county tax only applies to the first $2,500 of the price, so the local share tops out around $50–$90 even on an expensive truck. That is why the note under your result shows two pieces: the state percentage on the full taxable amount, and the local percentage on the first $2,500 only. Rates come from the DFA city & county table current for early 2026.

Cheap, weight-based tags

Registration is a flat $17, $25 or $30 a year depending on vehicle weight, plus a $2.50 validation decal and 50¢ postage. Electric vehicles add $200 a year, plug-in hybrids $100 and standard hybrids $50. There is no annual property tax collected at the DMV counter — but Arkansas counties do assess personal property tax on vehicles separately, due with your county taxes each year.

How does Arkansas calculate vehicle tax and registration?

The dealer will not collect your sales tax

Unlike almost every other state, Arkansas dealers do not add sales tax to the deal. You owe it at a DFA revenue office when you register — within 60 days of the purchase — and a 10% penalty lands if you are late. Budget for the tax as a separate bill after the dealership.

Used cars under $4,000 are tax-free

If the total price of a used vehicle is under $4,000, no sales tax is due — state or local. From $4,000 to $9,999.99 the state rate is cut nearly in half to 3.5%. Those thresholds apply to the full price of the car, not the price after your trade-in.

Local tax barely matters here

City and county rates look scary — Cabot’s combined rate is 10% — but for vehicles they only apply to the first $2,500 of the price. On a $30,000 car in Little Rock the entire local share is about $53. The state 6.5% on the full amount is what drives the bill.

Trade-ins reduce the tax; rebates do not

Arkansas taxes the net difference between the vehicle price and your trade-in credit. Manufacturer rebates get no deduction — the tax applies to the pre-rebate price. Note the used-car bands are chosen by the full price before the trade-in comes off.

Private sales are taxed on book value, not your bargain

A private purchase owes the same tax at registration, and DFA presumes the price is the greater of your bill of sale or the vehicle’s average loan value in industry pricing guides. Selling documents showing $1,500 for a $6,000-book car will not produce a $1,500 tax base.

Tags are among the cheapest in the country

A typical sedan pays $25 a year (plus $3 in decal and postage) — less than a tenth of what value-based states charge. The trade-off: Arkansas counties assess personal property tax on vehicles separately each year, which this calculator discloses but does not compute.

Electric vehicles pay $200 a year

Battery-electric vehicles owe an extra $200 with each annual registration, plug-in hybrids $100 and standard hybrids $50 — the pump-tax replacement schedule on the DFA fee chart.

What do people get wrong about Arkansas car fees?

Frequently asked questions

How much is sales tax on a $30,000 car in Arkansas?

About $2,003 in Little Rock: 6.5% state tax on the full $30,000 ($1,950) plus city and county tax on only the first $2,500 (about $53). Add $25 tags, a $10 title and $3 decal and the out-the-door government cost is roughly $2,041. You pay it at a DFA revenue office when you register, not at the dealership.

Do I pay sales tax on a used car under $4,000 in Arkansas?

No. If the total price of a used vehicle is under $4,000, no state or local sales tax is due. From $4,000 to $9,999.99 the reduced 3.5% state rate applies (plus normal local tax on the first $2,500); at $10,000 or more you pay the full 6.5%.

Why is the local tax so small on an Arkansas car purchase?

Arkansas caps local (city + county) tax at the first $2,500 of a vehicle purchase — the "single transaction" cap. Even in a 10% combined-rate city the local share tops out around $88; the 6.5% state tax on the full price is the real bill.

Does a trade-in reduce Arkansas sales tax?

Yes — you are taxed on the net difference between the price and your trade-in credit. Manufacturer rebates are not deducted. One catch: the $4,000/$10,000 used-car rate bands are chosen by the vehicle’s full price, before the trade-in comes off.

Do I pay sales tax on a private car sale in Arkansas?

Yes — the same tax, paid when you register at a DFA revenue office. DFA presumes the taxable price is the greater of your bill of sale or the vehicle’s average loan value in the pricing guides, so under-reporting the price does not lower the tax.

How long do I have to pay sales tax on a car in Arkansas?

You must register and pay within 60 days of the purchase date. After that, Arkansas adds a penalty equal to 10% of the tax due.

How much does it cost to register an electric car in Arkansas?

Normal weight-based tags ($17–$30) plus the $3 decal and postage, plus a $200 annual EV fee. Plug-in hybrids pay $100 and standard hybrids $50 instead.
