How much is tax, title and license in Texas?

Tax, title and license on a new $30,000 car comes to about $1,982.50 in Texas — $1,875 motor vehicle sales tax plus $107.50 in TxDMV registration and title fees, or 6.6% of the price. That total assumes a dealer purchase with no trade-in and no manufacturer rebate.

Texas charges a state vehicle tax rate of 6.25%, with no county or city add-on anywhere in the state. A trade-in reduces the taxable amount in Texas. A separately stated manufacturer rebate also reduces the taxable amount.

Every amount above comes from TxDMV and Texas statute — the sources are listed in full at the foot of this page, and every figure was last checked against them on 19 August 2026.

How does this Texas calculator work?

One rate, the whole state

Texas taxes vehicles under Tax Code chapter 152, which is separate from the chapter 151 sales tax that cities, counties and transit authorities add to. That is why a car is 6.25% everywhere while a television in Houston is 8.25%. There is no ZIP lookup on this page because there is nothing to look up — only the fixed county registration fee varies, by about $11 at most.

Rebates actually help here

The Comptroller’s definition of "total consideration" expressly excludes separately stated manufacturer rebates and dealer cash discounts. Texas is one of the few states where the factory rebate lowers the taxable amount rather than being taxed as if you had paid it — worth about $188 on a $3,000 rebate. This calculator deducts both the rebate and the trade-in, which matches the statute.

The 80% SPV rule for private sales

Buy from a dealer and tax follows the invoice. Buy privately and Texas charges 6.25% on the greater of what you actually paid or 80% of the vehicle’s Standard Presumptive Value — a book value TxDMV publishes for every VIN. It exists to stop $1 bills of sale. If the car is genuinely worth less than the state thinks (damage, high mileage), a certified appraisal on Form 14-128 within 30 days overrides SPV. Enter the price you paid here and treat the result as a floor: check the SPV calculator before you budget.

Cheap tags, one-off charges to watch

Registration is a flat $50.75 for cars ($30 motorcycles), plus $4.75 processing, a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee, and your county’s $10–$21.50 road and bridge fee — roughly $75 a year all in. New residents pay a flat $90 instead of the 6.25%, gifts between close family cost $10, and an even swap of two vehicles is $5.

How does Texas calculate vehicle tax and registration?

Local sales tax never touches a car in Texas

Texas retail rates run to 8.25% once cities and transit districts are counted, but the motor vehicle tax sits in its own chapter of the code at a flat 6.25%. On a $30,000 car that structure saves a Houston buyer about $600 versus being taxed at the general retail rate — and it means no calculator needs your ZIP to get Texas right.

One of the few states where a rebate cuts your tax

Most states tax the price before the manufacturer’s rebate comes off — Kansas, Florida, Illinois and California all do. Texas excludes separately stated manufacturer rebates from taxable consideration outright, so a $3,000 rebate saves you $3,000 of price and about $188 of tax on top.

The state has its own opinion of what your car is worth

On a private-party purchase Texas charges tax on the greater of your price or 80% of Standard Presumptive Value. A $9,000-SPV car bought for $2,000 is taxed on $7,200 — $450 instead of $125. Run the VIN through the TxDMV SPV calculator before you agree a price, and get a certified appraisal within 30 days if the vehicle is genuinely rough.

New residents get a $90 flat rate

Bring a car you already own into Texas and you owe a flat $90 new resident tax rather than 6.25% of its value — one of the most generous relocation rules anywhere. It applies to vehicles previously registered in your name in another state or country.

Gifts cost $10, even trades cost $5

A vehicle given between qualifying close relatives is taxed at a flat $10 regardless of value, and swapping two vehicles straight across costs $5. Both bypass SPV entirely — but the paperwork has to declare the transaction correctly, and a "gift" that involves any payment is not a gift.

Electric vehicles pay $400 up front, then $200 a year

Since September 2023 a new EV prepays $400 at first registration, covering two years, and pays $200 at every renewal after that. Hybrids — including plug-in hybrids — are specifically excluded from the fee.

The safety inspection became a fee

Texas ended annual safety inspections for non-commercial vehicles and replaced them with a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee collected with your registration. Emissions testing still applies in the larger metro counties, which is also why those counties charge the $33 title fee instead of $28.

Frequently asked questions

How much is tax, title and license on a $30,000 car in Texas?

About $1,982: $1,875 in motor vehicle sales tax (6.25% — the same in every county), a $33 title fee, $50.75 registration, $11.50 county road and bridge fee, $4.75 processing and a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee. There is no local sales tax on vehicles anywhere in Texas.

Does Texas charge local sales tax on cars?

No. Motor vehicles are taxed under Tax Code chapter 152 at a flat 6.25%, separate from the chapter 151 sales tax that cities, counties and transit authorities add to. Your ZIP code changes only the county registration fee, by around $11 at most.

Do manufacturer rebates reduce Texas car sales tax?

Yes — and that is unusual. The Comptroller excludes separately stated manufacturer rebates and dealer cash discounts from "total consideration", so they are not taxable. A $3,000 rebate saves about $188 in tax on top of the $3,000 off the price.

How is tax calculated on a private car sale in Texas?

On the greater of what you paid or 80% of the vehicle’s Standard Presumptive Value, the book value TxDMV publishes per VIN. If you genuinely paid less because the car is damaged or high-mileage, a certified appraisal on Form 14-128 filed within 30 days can override SPV.

I just moved to Texas — how much tax do I owe on my car?

A flat $90 new resident tax, in place of the 6.25% use tax, for a vehicle previously registered in your name in another state or country. You will also pay the title fee and first registration.

How much is the Texas EV registration fee?

$200 a year at renewal, or $400 at the first registration of a new electric vehicle — that prepays the initial two-year period. Hybrids and plug-in hybrids are exempt from the fee.

Does a trade-in reduce sales tax in Texas?

Yes. The value of a vehicle taken in trade is excluded from total consideration, so you pay 6.25% on the trade difference. Trading a $12,000 car against a $30,000 purchase saves $750 in tax.
