Indiana Vehicle Tax, Title & License Calculator
Tax, title and license on a new $30,000 car comes to about $2,557.35 in Indiana — $2,100 sales tax plus $457.35 in Indiana BMV registration and title fees, or 8.5% of the price.
Indiana's rate is the same statewide — no county or city add-on, so no ZIP lookup is needed. Includes Indiana BMV registration, title and plate fees.
Enter a trade-in or rebate and the state's own rule is applied for you — Indiana deducts your full trade-in allowance before tax, and a manufacturer rebate does not reduce it. You do not need to know which rule Indiana uses.

How much is tax, title and license in Indiana?
Tax, title and license on a new $30,000 car comes to about $2,557.35 in Indiana — $2,100 sales tax plus $457.35 in Indiana BMV registration and title fees, or 8.5% of the price. That total assumes a dealer purchase with no trade-in and no manufacturer rebate.
The line items are: Sales tax $2,100, Vehicle excise tax $406, Registration fee $21.35, Transportation infrastructure improvement fee $15, Certificate of title $15.
Indiana charges a state vehicle tax rate of 7%, with no county or city add-on anywhere in the state. A trade-in reduces the taxable amount in Indiana. A manufacturer rebate does not reduce the taxable amount.
Every amount above comes from Indiana BMV and Indiana statute — the sources are listed in full at the foot of this page, and every figure was last checked against them on 26 August 2026.
How much does it cost to register a car in Indiana?
Registering a newly purchased $30,000 car in Indiana costs about $457.35 in Indiana BMV registration, title and plate fees — separate from the $2,100.00 of sales tax due on the purchase. After that first year, keeping the same car registered costs about $389.35 a year.
The gap between those two numbers is the part people are caught out by: the first bill includes one-off title and plate charges that never appear again, so a renewal notice arriving a year later can look suspiciously small — or, where registration is priced on the car's value, uncomfortably large. Switch the calculator above to Renewing registration to see your own renewal figure and a five-year projection.
How Indiana compares to other states
On an identical new $30,000 car, Indiana is the 15th cheapest of the 24 states published here, at $2,557 — $202 above the median. The full range runs from South Carolina at $555 to Washington at $3,788.
Renewals rank differently, and that catches people out when they move. Indiana is 19th cheapest to keep a car registered year after year, at about $389 a year, against $20 in Georgia and $510 in Massachusetts. A state can be mid-table to buy a car in and the most expensive in the country to live with.
| State | Tax | Registration & title | Total | Yearly after |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pennsylvania | $2,400.00 | $125.00 | $2,525.00 | $53.00 |
| Indiana this page | $2,100.00 | $457.35 | $2,557.35 | $389.35 |
| Massachusetts | $1,875.00 | $810.00 | $2,685.00 | $510.00 |
Every state covered is priced the same way in the full state-by-state comparison, including the sales tax rules — statutory caps, trade-in credit and rebate treatment — that move the total far more than the headline rate does.

How does this Indiana calculator work?
The excise table, priced exactly
Indiana’s annual excise is not a percentage — it is a statutory lookup: 17 value classes by the vehicle’s original factory price, ten age columns within each, from $532 for a new $42,500+ vehicle down to a $12 floor. The full table is reproduced below and the calculator reads from it directly, using the model year you enter and MSRP where you provide it. Sites that quote Indiana registration as a single flat number are averaging away a table the state publishes.
What the counties add — and why it is not computed
Most Indiana counties levy an annual county vehicle excise surtax, and many add a wheel tax, both collected with registration and both set county by county — Marion, Lake and Allen all differ. The BMV publishes the current municipal rates as a downloadable table. These are disclosed on this page and excluded from the totals rather than guessed: a county-set figure presented as a state calculation would be wrong somewhere every time.
An EV fee that moves
Indiana indexes its EV supplemental fee, and it has climbed from the original $150 to $242 on the BMV’s current chart (hybrids $81). This page carries the chart figure and its verification date; a guide quoting $150 is years stale, and one quoting $221 is at least a cycle behind.
Trade-ins work everywhere, but only vehicle-for-vehicle
The 7% applies after a like-kind trade-in deduction — a motor vehicle traded against a motor vehicle — and unusually, the regulation extends the deduction to casual private sales, with use tax on the balance collected at the BMV when you title. Trading in a boat, camper or anything that is not a motor vehicle earns no deduction, and manufacturer rebates never reduce the taxable price.
How does Indiana calculate vehicle tax and registration?
Registration is a value tax wearing a flat fee’s clothes
The $21.35 registration fee is the small print; the excise tax is the bill. A new $32,000 car owes $406 of excise in year one, $353 in year two, sliding down the published table as it ages — economically an annual property tax on the car, administered through registration. It is why Indiana renewals on newer cars cost several times what the neighbouring flat-fee states charge, and why they get cheap as the car gets old.
One 7%, the whole state
Vehicle sales tax is a flat 7% at every address in Indiana — no county rate, no city rate, nothing to look up. The local variation lives on the registration side instead: county excise surtax and wheel tax, set county by county and collected with your plates.
The rebate is taxed; the trade-in is not — even privately
Indiana taxes the price before a manufacturer rebate comes off, but deducts a like-kind trade-in in full — and extends that deduction to private-party deals, which most states refuse. The one catch: like-kind means vehicle-for-vehicle. A $5,000 boat traded against a car is just payment, taxed like cash.
The EV fee has quietly risen 60%
What began as a $150 EV supplemental fee is $242 on the BMV’s current chart, because Indiana indexes it — one of the steepest EV registration surcharges in the country, and one of the most misquoted, since most fee sites still carry an old number. Hybrids pay $81.
Late costs real money
Indiana bills lateness separately: a $15 administrative penalty for late registration and $30 for a late title application. On a private purchase the title clock is yours to watch — the BMV collects the 7% use tax and the title fee together, and delay adds the penalty on top.

What do people get wrong about Indiana car fees?
- Indiana charges one flat 7% on vehicles everywhere in the state — no county or city sales tax exists, so there is no ZIP lookup to do.
- The trade-in deduction is vehicle-for-vehicle: a motor vehicle traded for a motor vehicle reduces the taxable price (a boat or camper traded against a car does not) — and the deduction applies on casual private sales too, not just at dealers (45 IAC 2.2-3-5).
- A manufacturer’s rebate "is not an allowable deduction from the taxable selling price" (DOR Bulletin #28S) — Indiana taxes the price before the rebate.
- Dealer documentation fees are part of the taxable selling price (Bulletin #28S).
- Buy from a private seller and the 7% is collected as use tax at the BMV when you title and register — the title does not move until it is paid.
- Counties add their own annual charges to registration: a county vehicle excise surtax and, in many counties, a wheel tax, each set county by county. They are disclosed here, not computed — your county’s rates are in the BMV’s municipal tax table.

Frequently asked questions
How much is TTL in Indiana?
On a $30,000 vehicle, tax, title and license (TTL) in Indiana comes to about $2,557.35 — $2,100.00 in sales tax plus $457.35 in Indiana BMV title, registration and plate fees, or about 8.5% of the price. The rate is the same everywhere in Indiana, so no ZIP lookup is needed — the calculator above applies the state's real rules. Verified against Indiana BMV on 26 August 2026.
How much is tax, title and registration on a $30,000 car in Indiana?
About $2,557: 7% sales tax ($2,100), the $15 title, and first-year registration of $442.35 — a $406 excise tax for a $30,000-class vehicle plus the $21.35 registration fee and $15 infrastructure fee. County excise surtax and wheel tax, set by your county, come on top at registration.
What is the sales tax on a car in Indiana?
A flat 7% statewide — no county or city addition. It applies to the price after a like-kind trade-in and before any manufacturer rebate, includes the dealer doc fee, and on private sales is collected as use tax at the BMV when you title the vehicle.
How is Indiana vehicle excise tax calculated?
From a published table, not a formula you apply to your purchase price: the class comes from the vehicle’s original factory price (17 classes, from under $1,500 to $42,500+), the amount from its age — $532 in year one at the top of the table, declining every year to a floor of $12–$50 by age nine. The full table is on this page, and the calculator reads from it directly.
Does a trade-in reduce sales tax in Indiana?
Yes — the like-kind trade-in deduction takes the full value of a motor vehicle traded against a motor vehicle off the taxable price, at a dealer or in a private deal. It does not apply to non-vehicle trades, and manufacturer rebates are never deducted.
What is the EV registration fee in Indiana?
$242 a year on the BMV’s current fee chart, on top of normal registration — the fee is indexed and has risen from the original $150, so older articles understate it. Hybrids pay an $81 supplemental fee.
What are Indiana’s county wheel tax and surtax?
Annual county-level charges collected with your registration: a county vehicle excise surtax and, in many counties, a wheel tax, each set by the county council. Amounts differ across all 92 counties, which is why this calculator discloses them rather than guessing — the BMV publishes the current county and municipal rates.
Do you pay sales tax on a used car from a private seller in Indiana?
Yes — 7% use tax on the price, paid at the BMV when you title and register. A like-kind vehicle trade-in reduces the taxable amount even in a private deal. Title late (past 45 days) and a $30 penalty joins the bill.
