Washington Vehicle Tax, Title & License Calculator
Tax, title and license on a new $30,000 car in Seattle comes to about $3,788.25 in Washington — $3,315 sales/use tax (incl. 0.5% motor vehicle tax) plus $473.25 in Washington DOL registration and title fees, or 12.6% of the price.
Enter your ZIP and we apply your exact Washington local rate — not a state average, and you don't have to look the rate up yourself. Includes Washington DOL registration, title and plate fees.
Enter a trade-in or rebate and the state's own rule is applied for you — Washington deducts your full trade-in allowance before tax, and a manufacturer rebate does not reduce it. You do not need to know which rule Washington uses.

How much is tax, title and license in Washington?
Tax, title and license on a new $30,000 car in Seattle comes to about $3,788.25 in Washington — $3,315 sales/use tax (incl. 0.5% motor vehicle tax) plus $473.25 in Washington DOL registration and title fees, or 12.6% of the price. That total assumes a dealer purchase with no trade-in and no manufacturer rebate, registered in Seattle.
The line items are: Sales/use tax (incl. 0.5% motor vehicle tax) $3,315, Registration fee $78.25, Title application $15, License plates (new issue) $50, RTA excise tax (Sound Transit) $330.
Washington charges a state vehicle tax rate of 7%, and combined state-plus-local rates range from 9.1% to 11.2% depending on where the vehicle is registered. A trade-in reduces the taxable amount in Washington. A manufacturer rebate does not reduce the taxable amount.
Every amount above comes from Washington DOL and Washington statute — the sources are listed in full at the foot of this page, and every figure was last checked against them on 26 August 2026.
How much does it cost to register a car in Washington?
Registering a newly purchased $30,000 car in Washington costs about $473.25 in Washington DOL registration, title and plate fees — separate from the $3,315.00 of sales/use tax (incl. 0.5% motor vehicle tax) due on the purchase. After that first year, keeping the same car registered costs about $391.75 a year.
The gap between those two numbers is the part people are caught out by: the first bill includes one-off title and plate charges that never appear again, so a renewal notice arriving a year later can look suspiciously small — or, where registration is priced on the car's value, uncomfortably large. Switch the calculator above to Renewing registration to see your own renewal figure and a five-year projection.
How Washington compares to other states
On an identical new $30,000 car, Washington is the 21st cheapest of the 21 states published here, at $3,788 — $1,486 above the median. The full range runs from South Carolina at $555 to Washington at $3,788.
Renewals rank differently, and that catches people out when they move. Washington is 18th cheapest to keep a car registered year after year, at about $392 a year, against $20 in Georgia and $510 in Massachusetts. A state can be mid-table to buy a car in and the most expensive in the country to live with.
| State | Tax | Registration & title | Total | Yearly after |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| California | $2,925.00 | $452.00 | $3,377.00 | $417.50 |
| Washington this page | $3,315.00 | $473.25 | $3,788.25 | $391.75 |
Every state covered is priced the same way in the full state-by-state comparison, including the sales tax rules — statutory caps, trade-in credit and rebate treatment — that move the total far more than the headline rate does.

How does this Washington calculator work?
The 0.5% most calculators are missing
Washington layers an additional statewide motor vehicle sales/use tax on every vehicle sale and lease, on top of the regular combined rate. It was 0.3% for years — and became 0.5% on 1 January 2026. Every rate on this page already includes it, which is why the figures here run 0.5% above the rate printed on a Seattle receipt for ordinary goods, and 0.2% above any car calculator that has not been updated this year.
How the RTA excise is computed — and why it feels too high
Inside the Sound Transit district, renewals carry a 1.1% excise on the vehicle’s value — but not its market value. State law fixes the valuation at a percentage of original MSRP by age (100% in year one, 95% in year two, down to 10% at year thirteen and beyond), using a 1999 schedule that depreciates far slower than actual used-car prices. The result on a $30,000 car: $330 in year one, still $195 in year six. This calculator reproduces DOL’s own worked example to the cent and applies the schedule from the MSRP you enter; a friendlier 2006 schedule takes effect in 2028 once existing bonds allow.
Trade-ins: better than almost anywhere
The like-kind trade-in exclusion removes the full trade-in value from the taxable price — with no dollar cap, and including casual private-party purchases, which nearly every other state refuses. Trade a $10,000 car against a $30,000 one in Seattle and the exclusion saves $1,105 in tax whether you bought from a dealer or a neighbour. The one asymmetry: manufacturer rebates stay in the taxable price, per DOR’s own dealer guidance.
What is deliberately not computed
City Transportation Benefit District (TBD) fees — $20 to $50 in many cities, set city by city — are disclosed but not computed, the same treatment county-set charges get everywhere on this site. Service and filing fees on title work vary by office and channel ($6.50–$29) and are noted on the title line. And the sales-tax city list covers the major metros; anywhere else, the state-plus-motor-vehicle base applies until you pick a listed city.
How does Washington calculate vehicle tax and registration?
The rate went up this year
On 1 January 2026 Washington’s extra motor vehicle tax rose from 0.3% to 0.5%. A $40,000 purchase now carries $80 more tax than the same deal in December 2025 — and any calculator, dealer worksheet or forum answer written before this year is quietly 0.2% low on every Washington quote.
Seattle metro: the most expensive place published here to put a car on the road
Stack Seattle’s 11.05% vehicle rate (10.55% combined + 0.5% motor vehicle tax) on a $30,000 car, add the $330 first-year RTA excise, plates, title and tabs, and the transaction tops every other state published on this site — beyond even Los Angeles. Cross to Spokane or Vancouver, outside the Sound Transit district, and the same car sheds the RTA entirely and 1.5–2 points of rate.
The car-tab tax that survived a $30 initiative
The RTA excise is Washington’s most litigated car fee: voters approved $30 flat tabs in 2019, the state supreme court struck the initiative down in 2020, and the 1.1% excise continues — computed on a 1999 depreciation schedule that values newer cars above what they would sell for, because Sound Transit’s bonds were pledged against it. Relief is scheduled, not promised: the friendlier 2006 schedule takes over in 2028.
Private-party buyers keep the trade-in credit
Washington extends its like-kind trade-in exclusion to casual sales — buy privately, hand your old car to the seller as part of the deal, and the taxable price drops by its value, uncapped. New Jersey restricts the credit to registered dealers and California denies it entirely; Washington is the generous outlier, though the paperwork (recording the trade in the transaction) is on you.
EVs pay a $225 stack
Three separate line items hit plug-in renewals: the $100 electric vehicle fee, a $50 transportation fee, and the $75 transportation electrification fee — $225 a year for anything with 30 miles of electric range, hybrids below that paying the $75 alone. Washington also runs a sales-tax exemption on part of the price of qualifying cheaper EVs, a rare case of the state charging with one hand and discounting with the other.
No income tax; the car pays instead
Washington funds itself on sales and excise taxes, and vehicles carry a full load: the highest published combined rates outside California, the extra motor vehicle percentage, weight-based tabs, city TBD fees and the RTA excise. The structural upside is at the counter: the fees are flat and published, the tax arithmetic is exact, and nothing here depends on a negotiation.

What do people get wrong about Washington car fees?
- Vehicles pay MORE than the posted sales tax rate in Washington: an additional statewide motor vehicle sales/use tax applies to every retail sale and lease — 0.3% through 2025, and 0.5% from 1 January 2026 (the rates above include it). Calculators still adding 0.3% understate every Washington quote.
- The trade-in exclusion is unusually generous: a like-kind trade-in delivered as part of the same transaction reduces the taxable price with no cap — and unlike almost everywhere else, the exclusion applies to PRIVATE-party purchases too (WAC 458-20-247).
- Manufacturer rebates do not reduce the tax: "The amount of the rebate may not be deducted from the selling price before retail sales tax is charged" (DOR auto-dealer guide). A dealer’s own discount does reduce it.
- Buy from a private seller or out of state and use tax is due at the same rates when you license the vehicle at DOL — computed on the purchase price, checked against fair market value.
- Dealer sales are taxed where you take delivery (normally the dealership); use tax on private and out-of-state purchases follows your address. Pick the city that matches.
- Cities can add a Transportation Benefit District (TBD) fee — commonly $20–$50 — to renewals inside their limits. It is city-set and not included in these figures.

Frequently asked questions
How much is TTL in Washington?
On a $30,000 vehicle, tax, title and license (TTL) in Washington comes to about $3,788.25 — $3,315.00 in sales/use tax (incl. 0.5% motor vehicle tax) plus $473.25 in Washington DOL title, registration and plate fees, or about 12.6% of the price. Your exact TTL depends on your local rate: enter your ZIP in the calculator above and Washington's real rules are applied. Verified against Washington DOL on 26 August 2026.
How much is tax, title and license on a $30,000 car in Washington?
In Seattle: about $3,315 in sales tax (11.05% — the 10.55% combined rate plus the 0.5% motor vehicle tax), $78.25 in tabs for a car of 4,000 lbs or less, a $15 title, $50 plates, and a $330 first-year RTA excise — roughly $3,788 all in, about 12.6% of the price. In Spokane the same car is about $2,880 in tax with no RTA at all. Your city decides more than your car does.
What is the sales tax on a car in Washington?
Your local combined rate PLUS an extra statewide motor vehicle tax — 0.5% from 1 January 2026 (it was 0.3% before). That puts Seattle at 11.05%, Tacoma at 11.0%, Spokane at 9.6%, Vancouver at 9.4% on vehicles. Private-party and out-of-state purchases pay the same rates as use tax when the vehicle is licensed.
What is the RTA tax on car tabs?
A 1.1% annual excise on your vehicle’s depreciated MSRP, charged with registration for addresses inside the Sound Transit district — urban King, Pierce and Snohomish counties, including Seattle, Bellevue, Tacoma and Everett. The value comes from a statutory schedule (100% of MSRP in year one down to 10% from year thirteen), not from market prices, which is why the bill often looks high for the car. Spokane, Vancouver and everywhere outside the district pay nothing.
Does a trade-in reduce sales tax in Washington?
Yes, fully — the like-kind trade-in exclusion removes the whole trade-in value from the taxable price, with no cap, and it applies to private-party purchases as well as dealer sales when the trade is part of the same transaction. Manufacturer rebates are the opposite: DOR is explicit that they may not be deducted before tax.
How much are car tabs in Washington?
The DOL basic fee is $43.25, plus a weight fee that brings a typical car to $78.25 a year ($98.25 over 4,000 lbs, $118.25 over 6,000). Then the address decides the rest: an RTA excise inside the Sound Transit district, a city TBD fee of $20–$50 in many cities, and $225 in plug-in fees for EVs.
How much is the EV fee in Washington?
$225 a year at renewal for vehicles with at least 30 miles of electric range: a $100 EV registration fee, a $50 transportation fee and the $75 transportation electrification fee. Hybrids under 30 miles of range pay just the $75. These stack on top of normal tabs and any RTA excise.
Do you pay sales tax on a used car from a private seller in Washington?
Yes — use tax at your address’s vehicle rate is collected when you license the car, computed on the price you paid and checked against fair market value. The silver lining is the trade-in rule: if you gave the seller a like-kind vehicle as part of the deal, its value comes off the taxable amount even in a casual sale.
