Virginia Vehicle Tax, Title & License Calculator

Tax, title and license on a new $30,000 car comes to about $1,290.75 in Virginia — $1,245 motor vehicle sales and use tax (SUT) plus $45.75 in Virginia DMV registration and title fees, or 4.3% of the price.

Virginia's rate is the same statewide — no county or city add-on, so no ZIP lookup is needed. Includes Virginia DMV registration, title and plate fees.

Enter a trade-in or rebate and the state's own rule is applied for you — Virginia gives no trade-in credit — tax is charged on the full price, and a manufacturer rebate also comes off the taxable amount. You do not need to know which rule Virginia uses.

How much is tax, title and license in Virginia?

Tax, title and license on a new $30,000 car comes to about $1,290.75 in Virginia — $1,245 motor vehicle sales and use tax (SUT) plus $45.75 in Virginia DMV registration and title fees, or 4.3% of the price. That total assumes a dealer purchase with no trade-in and no manufacturer rebate.

The line items are: Motor Vehicle Sales and Use Tax (SUT) $1,245, Registration fee $30.75, Certificate of title $15.

Virginia charges a state vehicle tax rate of 4.15%, with no county or city add-on anywhere in the state. A trade-in does not reduce the taxable amount in Virginia — tax is charged on the full purchase price. A separately stated manufacturer rebate also reduces the taxable amount.

Every amount above comes from Virginia DMV and Virginia statute — the sources are listed in full at the foot of this page, and every figure was last checked against them on 25 August 2026.

How much does it cost to register a car in Virginia?

Registering a newly purchased $30,000 car in Virginia costs about $45.75 in Virginia DMV registration, title and plate fees — separate from the $1,245.00 of motor vehicle sales and use tax (SUT) due on the purchase. After that first year, keeping the same car registered costs about $30.75 a year.

The gap between those two numbers is the part people are caught out by: the first bill includes one-off title and plate charges that never appear again, so a renewal notice arriving a year later can look suspiciously small — or, where registration is priced on the car's value, uncomfortably large. Switch the calculator above to Renewing registration to see your own renewal figure and a five-year projection.

How Virginia compares to other states

On an identical new $30,000 car, Virginia is the 3rd cheapest of the 18 states published here, at $1,291 $949 below the median. The full range runs from South Carolina at $555 to California at $3,377.

Renewals rank differently, and that catches people out when they move. Virginia is 4th cheapest to keep a car registered year after year, at about $31 a year, against $20 in Georgia and $445 in Arizona. A state can be mid-table to buy a car in and the most expensive in the country to live with.

Texas$1,875.00$107.50$1,982.50$74.50

Every state covered is priced the same way in the full state-by-state comparison, including the sales tax rules — statutory caps, trade-in credit and rebate treatment — that move the total far more than the headline rate does.

How does this Virginia calculator work?

The trade-in rule most calculators get backwards

In most states a trade-in reduces the taxable price and a rebate does not. Virginia inverts both: the statute defines sale price "without any allowance or deduction for trade-ins", and separately excludes manufacturer rebates and incentive payments from it. Enter a trade-in above and this calculator leaves the taxable price alone — with a warning saying so — while a rebate is deducted before the 4.15% is applied. A calculator that applies the usual rules to Virginia misprices both directions at once.

Cheap to title, but the “car tax” lives elsewhere

Virginia’s one-time costs are modest: 4.15% SUT, $15 title, $30.75 or $35.75 registration. What Virginians actually complain about is the annual local personal property tax — the "car tax" — levied by cities and counties on a vehicle’s assessed value each year, partially offset by state relief on the first $20,000. It is a property tax on ownership, not a cost of the purchase transaction, so it is excluded here the same way every state’s property taxes are; budget for it separately, because in many localities it exceeds everything on this page.

What the $75 floor means

SUT is 4.15% of the sale price or $75, whichever is greater. The floor matters below about $1,807: a $500 farm truck and a $1,500 runabout both pay $75 at titling. DMV also compares reported private-sale prices against used-car-guide trade-in values, so an implausibly low reported price is verified or taxed at book value — the calculator taxes the price you enter.

How does Virginia calculate vehicle tax and registration?

A trade-in saves you nothing in tax

Virginia is one of very few states where a trade-in does not reduce the taxable price at all. The DMV’s own example: buy a $40,000 car, trade in your old one for $5,000, and SUT is still 4.15% of $40,000 — $1,660. In Ohio the same deal would knock $290 off the tax; in Tennessee about $350. In Virginia, zero.

But rebates are tax-free

The same statute that denies the trade-in credit excludes manufacturer rebates and incentives from the sale price — the mirror image of states like Tennessee and Ohio, which tax the pre-rebate price. A $3,000 rebate in Virginia saves you $3,000 plus $124.50 of tax.

One rate, the whole state

The 4.15% SUT is the same in Fairfax, Richmond, Roanoke and everywhere between — no city or county addition, so there is no ZIP-code lookup to do. The local bite comes later, as the annual personal property tax on the car’s value, which each locality sets for itself.

The doc fee is taxed

Virginia dealers charge processing fees that are among the highest in the country — several hundred dollars is routine, and the state sets no cap. The sale price that SUT applies to includes that fee, so a $899 processing fee carries about $37 of tax with it.

Electric vehicles pay a Highway Use Fee

EVs registered in Virginia pay an annual Highway Use Fee — $135.63 on the current DMV chart, indexed each year — as a stand-in for the fuel tax they do not pay. Fuel-efficient petrol vehicles (25 mpg or better) pay a smaller formula-based amount, and the Mileage Choice program lets either pay per mile instead.

Registration is priced by scale, not sticker

A $150,000 car and a $15,000 one pay the same to register in Virginia — $30.75 up to 4,000 lbs, $35.75 from 4,001 to 6,500 lbs. Weight, not value, is the only thing the annual fee looks at, which makes Virginia one of the cheaper states to keep an expensive car registered.

How much is TTL in Virginia?

On a $30,000 vehicle, tax, title and license (TTL) in Virginia comes to about $1,290.75 — $1,245.00 in motor vehicle sales and use tax (SUT) plus $45.75 in Virginia DMV title, registration and plate fees, or about 4.3% of the price. The rate is the same everywhere in Virginia, so no ZIP lookup is needed — the calculator above applies the state's real rules. Verified against Virginia DMV on 25 August 2026.

How much is tax, title and registration on a $30,000 car in Virginia?

SUT is 4.15% of $30,000 — $1,245 — regardless of any trade-in. Add the $15 title and $30.75 registration (4,000 lbs or less) and the transaction costs about $1,290.75. The annual local personal property tax is separate and recurs every year.

Does a trade-in reduce sales tax in Virginia?

No. Virginia computes SUT on the gross sale price without any deduction for a trade-in — the statute says so in those words, and the DMV’s own example taxes a $40,000 purchase in full despite a $5,000 trade. Manufacturer rebates, by contrast, are excluded from the taxable price.

What is the vehicle sales tax rate in Virginia?

4.15% of the sale price, statewide, with a $75 minimum. The taxable price includes the dealer processing fee and excludes manufacturer rebates. No city or county adds to the rate.

How much is car registration in Virginia?

$30.75 a year for a passenger vehicle up to 4,000 lbs, $35.75 from 4,001 to 6,500 lbs, $24.75 for a motorcycle. Electric vehicles add the annual Highway Use Fee, $135.63 on the current chart.

What is the Virginia Highway Use Fee?

An annual fee on electric and fuel-efficient vehicles that replaces the fuel tax they avoid — $135.63 for an EV on the current DMV chart, indexed yearly; fuel-efficient petrol vehicles pay a smaller formula-based amount. The Mileage Choice program lets you pay per mile instead.

What about Virginia’s annual car tax?

That is the local personal property tax — an annual tax on your vehicle’s assessed value levied by your city or county, with state relief covering part of the first $20,000. It is a property tax on ownership, not part of the purchase transaction, so it is not in these figures; in many localities it is the largest cost of keeping a car.

Is the $75 minimum tax real on very cheap cars?

Yes. SUT is 4.15% or $75, whichever is greater, so any vehicle under about $1,807 pays $75. DMV also cross-checks private-sale prices against used-car-guide values, so an unrealistically low reported price will be questioned or taxed at book value.
